New Delhi: In an alarming development, water storage levels in river basins in the southern and western parts of India are at a 10-year low.
Data released by the Central Water Commission shows a paucity of rainfall in the last few weeks has led to a severe water deficit.
The Godavari and Narmada river basins among others have water levels of between 7 and 9 per cent of their total capacities. While May and June registered exceptional rainfall, a lull in the monsoon followed in months after that.
The water shortage could seriously impact agricultural production in these belts.
The northern and eastern parts of the country are relatively better off, with some areas having more water than last year.
