ULFA attack has WB, Bihar on alert

Tinsukia (Assam): The escalating violence is Assam, in which 48 people have died in the past two days, is being seen as a last ditch attempt by the ULFA.

But Bengal and Bihar are taking no chances with both states on a high alert. The Army has intensified operations against the ULFA.

"There were feelers of talks with the top leaders. Some back tracking took place," said Union Home Secretary, V K Duggal.

In a brutal backtracking, after gunning down 17 non-Assamese workers on Friday in the Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts, the ULFA went on a rampage on Saturday gunning down migrant workers from Bihar and Bengal. 4

“More forces will be sent if needed, we will give more support to the state government,” said Duggal.

It's a last ditch effort by ULFA trying to prove a point. After the ceasefire was called off in late September and Army struck ULFA hideouts, the extremist group has been choosing soft targets.

This time the ULFA has specifically chosen the familiar terrain of upper Assam. Bihar is also taking preventive measures.

“Bihar has been put on high alert. Security in trains going to and from Assam is also being increased,” said Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

The ULFA's real target could well be the upcoming National Games in February.

The Centre is insistent that the national games will go on as scheduled.

With the ULFA refusing to talk, the stalemate continues as does the violence.
