Kolkata: One more investor, who had deposited money in chit fund company Saradha Group, on Saturday committed suicide. Tapan Biswas, a resident of Purulia, allegedly hanged himself. Tapan had invested Rs 4 lakh with the chit fund company. He was reportedly depressed after Saradha went bust.
This is the fourth suicide, including three investor and one agent, after the chit fund company Saradha had gone bust.
Meanwhile, the West Bengal chit fund disaster is continuing to embarrass the ruling Trinamool Congress government. But the party is trying to minimise the damage by trying to distance itself from the mess.
Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP Kunal Ghosh, one of the two accused of blackmailing Saradha group promoter Sudipta Sen, has offered to resign if he is told to do so. He also wrote a letter (in Bengali) to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that has been displayed on the party website.
Ghosh has told told CNN-IBN that he is ready to quit if proven guilty. "Who is giving my name? Who is blaming me? A fraud like Sudipto Sen? I am ready to face any kind of investiation and if the investigation reveals that I am connected with Sudipta Sen's money market business, I am ready to resign from the membership of the Rajya Sabha," Ghosh said.
Kunal Ghosh's name cropped up in the scam after a letter written by Saradha group promoter Sudipta Sen to the CBI on April 6 this year came to light. In the letter, Sudipta Sen levelled several charges against Ghosh and another TMC MP saying that they offered him protection and easy access to Mamata in return for appointing Ghosh as the CEO of a channel he had newly acquired at a salary of Rs 15 lakh per month. Both the MPs have vehemently denied the charges.
Meanwhile, twenty employees of news channel Channel 10 on Friday filed an FIR against Sudipta Sen and Kunal Ghosh over non-payment of salaries. The FIR was filed by a section of the Channel 10 employees at the Park Street Police Station on Thursday night. The FIR, which also names six other senior employees of the organisation, has alleged fraud by the company management on grounds of non-payment of salaries which are pending since February 2013. This is the seventh complaint lodged against the Saradha top brass.
