WB govt to offer sops to Singur farmers

Singur: Ahead of the meeting convened by governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, the West Bengal government is proposing a new compensation package for all farmers who gave up their land for the Tata Nano plant.

The Left Front government hopes that the new compensation package will benefit not just the 2200 land-losing families who raised a banner of revolt but the government doesn't want to hurt those who had willingly given up their land either.

The government is not revealing the details but hopes that all 13,000 families who gave up plots will get a better deal.

West Bengal Industry minister, Nirupam Sen says, “Every detail, we have communicated to the government. He has taken all notes. He will talk to the other side.”

It is an offer which Mamata Banerjee may not accept easily as she is insisting on the land-for-land formula, which means that those who have given up land will have to be given alternate plots.

However, the government says this is an impossible demand.

In a land-starved state like West Bengal, this will open up a Pandora's box. In the meantime, the Mamata camp is sticking to its original stand.

Trinamool Congress leader, Partha Chatterjee says, “The issue of return of land is primary. We have come with this hope.”

For Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi holding parleys with the different parties through the day, this could mean taking the first step of a long negotiation process.

Hopes are high. Tata Motors maintain that it will roll out the Nano on time though it does not say from where.

Ratan Tata says, “We will do everything possible to come as close to the plant (car) launch date. It depends on what happens to the thing there.”

The Left Front government wants a speedy solution for two obvious reasons. One, it doesn't want the Nano project to go out of Bengal and two, it does not want Mamata Banerjee to win over the rural electorate with her non-stop agitation.
