Kolkata: A 13-year-old sexual harassment victim committed suicide in West Bengal. The class VIII student set herself on fire following alleged sustained harassment in the hands of local youngsters.
The youngsters allegedly sexually harassed her on her way to school. The incident took place in the Burnpur area near Asansol in the Burdwan district of West Bengal. Local people made the victim and her father sit in reconciliation meetings with the accused on August 10 and 11 after the family planned to file a police complaint.
The duo was allegedly heckled in that reconciliation meeting. Following the humiliation at that meeting the girl poured kerosene and set herself on fire at home on Monday.
She was moved to a hospital in a critical condition where she succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday morning. The victim's father has lodged an FIR against nine local youngsters at the local police station. The police have picked up six of the accused.
