New Delhi: A day after the Congress snub to the Left over the deadline they had issued to the United Progressive Alliance Government on the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Deal, the Communist Party of India General Secretary AB Bardhan blamed the Congress for precipitating the crisis.
"We don't want lessons in courtesy from Congressmen. He (Manmohan Singh) is trying to precipitate a situation where we might have to withdraw even before he returns. But that's not our intention. That's why we've fixed the time like this," Bardhan said.
On Friday, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) General Secretary Prakash Karat had gave the ultimatum to the Central Government.
"We wish to know definitely whether the government is proceeding to seek the approval of the Safeguards Agreement. Please let us know the position by July 7, 2008," Karat said.
The deadline has been set for the day Prime Minister Manmohan Singh leaves for Tokyo to attend the G8 summit.
Senior CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury had said that the Left would "keep the dignity of the country and the post of the Prime Minister in mind when he is on a tour abroad", hinting that support would not be withdrawn when Manmohan is in Tokyo.
