We will win the Prez battle: NDA

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The NDA is trying to reach out to the Third Front in the battle for Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The Opposition party decided there would be a contest after Atal Behari Vajpayee said there was no question of agreeing on a consensus to the UPA nominee, Pratibha Patil.

The BJP said the manner of Pratibha Patil's nomination reflected internal differences within the UPA.

The NDA has also attacked the UPA saying the criteria for the Presidential candidate was loyalty to Sonia Gandhi.

CNN-IBN's Bhupendra Chaubey spoke to BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

Bhupendra Chaubey: Is Mr Shekhawat really going to contest for the Presidential post?

Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi: First and foremost the UPA's attitude has not been one for a unanimous, consensus candidate for the President's post. Secondly for the UPA, the criteria for the Presidential candidate was loyalty to the Sonia Gandhi, more than loyalty to the Constitution.

Bhupendra Chaubey: Will Shekhawat still contest?

Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi: NDA will decide who contests. But there will be a contest.

Bhupendra Chaubey: Will Shekhawat still be an independent candidate?

Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi: Senior NDA leaders will decide that.

Bhupendra Chaubey: What does NDA want to prove through this contest?

Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi: This is not just a contest. We are fighting to win. And we will win.
