We won't forget California on Washington, says Bush

San Diego County: US President George W Bush got a first-hand look at the devastation across southern California following five days of deadly wildfires.

“We're not going to forget you in Washington. Today, your life might look dismal, but tomorrow life's going to be better,” he said.

On the frontlines, Santa Ana winds are easing up and finally letting exhausted fire crews gain some ground.

As containment increases, more evacuated residents are being allowed to return home.

Ben and Billie Schlotte and their two sons spent the last few days at qualcomm stadium.

“We have just been thinking about all of this for the last three days and, you know, wondering if we even had a house or anything left from our home,” they say.

The Schlottes feared the worst when they left their house in Ramona, about 35 miles northwest of San Diego, taking with them their four cats and some photo albums. The fire swept up their road shortly after.

“It's gone. It burnt everything,” they recall.

It's still unclear how many of these fires started. Governor Schwarzenegger has said weather conditions created a perfect storm. Now, officials in two counties say arson investigations are underway.

“As far as the arson is concerned, the reason we think it is because we found multiple points of origin,” says fire chief Kris Concepcion.

Two people have been arrested under suspicion of arson and fire officials hope to have the Harris fire fully contained by next week.
