New Delhi: The weather woes in North India are slightly different this year. Delhi woke up to a thick smog blanket on Saturday morning which claimed five lives when a train ran over them due to poor visibility.
Met department experts have blamed western disturbances for the early fog.
India Meteorological Department Director, B P Yadav said, "The Easterly Winds have brought in moisture that coupled with pollutants and created this condition."
But environment experts have blamed rising pollution in Delhi for the blanket of smog. The smog was especially thick in areas where there is heavy traffic or ongoing contruction.
A recent study shows that Delhi is the most polluted city in the country with over 200 micrograms per cubic metre particulate matter in the air.
In 2007, Delhi recorded a particulate matter of 158 as compared to 208 in 2008.
Delhi residents have now started feeling the effects of the smog as far as their health is concerned.
Experts say with the given climatic conditions, the situation is only going to get worse. Residents say they now need to be alert all the time as far as their health is concerned.
With winter setting in in a couple of weeks, Delhi residents will have to gear up for some smoggy days ahead.
