Thiruvananthapuram: The celebration of Onam, a popular harvest festival of Kerala, is also all about wearing new dresses.

Its Onam season in Kerala and weavers in a village in Palakkad district are working day and night to meet the high demand for handloom outfits for the festive season.

As for Dwarai Chettiyar, a 65-year-old weaver, he gets no rest these days as the demand for his handloom products has shot up.

Chettiyar says, “We are making special designs for Onam. There is great demand for the products.”

Dwarai is just one among hundreds of weavers in a tiny village called Peruvamba in Palakkad district of Kerala.

Here every household echoes with the sound of the traditional looms churning out thousands of units of Kerala's traditional attire, the mundu and gold-brocaded off-white sarees.

The festival of Onam denotes prosperity. It is also a time when Malayalis buy new dresses. During this season, the weavers in Kerala get business to the tune of lakhs of rupees.

Designing expert, G. Mohan says, “Our high quality products like set Mundu and Kerala sarees reach all over India. They are even exporting it for Malayalis in foreign countries. We are so busy for the last three months to meet the Onam demands.”

The weavers of Peruvamba have been making these traditional clothes for over 200 years now.

Although the interest in handloom products is waning in the recent days, Onam is one time, when they have something to cheer about.
