Bahupur/Hoshiarpur: No man is an island, they say. But here is a story of how men living on an island, on a river in Punjab are actually finding themselves isolated from society as they go about searching for brides but to no avail.
For Satnam Singh and other young men, the 30 sq km island of Bahupur is not just geographical isolation. They all are entrapped in a fear- fear of being a chronic bachelor.
In this island, marriage is a matter of chance, never a matter of choice. And the story of 40-year-old Teja Singh is echoed by the whole village.
“Wedlock is deadlock for me. People come here with proposals and give us hope but never return. I have absolutely no hope now,” says Teja.
This island with a population of 4, 000 is part of Punjab. Though situated in a state that is flourishing, the island has somehow missed the bus.
Basic amenities including schools, hospitals and even transportation facilities, even barring boats, are missing here.
People here blame politicians for their state of affairs for all the reasons why the island has fallen out of favour when it comes to marriage
“Basically every party like Congress and SAD makes promise to make bridges. But when they comes in power, promise becomes fake,” says a resident, Sukhjinder Singh Gill.
The villagers want the government to first address their demand for a bridge as they hope that it will bring doctors and teachers to the island, where no child has ever studied beyond Class 8. And not to forget the wedding bells they all yearn for.
