West Bengal's top Maoist leader arrested

New Delhi: West Bengal's most wanted Maoist leader Somen, also known as Himadri Sen Roy, was arrested from Hridaypur in North 24 Parganas on Saturday evening.

Somen is the state secretary of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) and has been charged with plotting the murders of several Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leaders and police officers.

Police say the 52-year-old Somen along with his associate Deba was arrested from Hridaypur railway platform by plain-clothes detectives and has been remanded to police custody till March 7 by a Barasat court in North 24 Parganas district.

They say Somen was also wanted in connection with several cases of killings and other subversive activities in West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.

Some arms and gelatine sticks, too, were recovered from him.

"Somen, General Secretary of West Bengal unit of CPI (Maoist) has been interrogated by the CID last night and we have found his involvement in numerous subversive activities and killings," Additional Director General of CID Vupinder Singh was quoted as saying by the PTI.

"We have seized a large number of banned literature, threat letters, anti-nationalist documents, arms and gelatine sticks from him. After interrogating him we have made several raids in the district" Singh said.

According to Singh, Somen was also was involved in training the other Maoists and was behind several Maoist actions in West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.

Deba was produced in Sreerampore court and he was also remanded to police custody.
