CHENNAI: The iPhone 4 S got off to a wet start in Chennai, with the heavens opening up so wide that the roads in front of venues selected for two star-studded midnight launches, looked like a tsunami had just departed.
Despite plenty of company driven hype by mobile operators Airtel and Aircel about a huge pre-order success for the iPhone’s latest ‘fully loaded’ avatar, there was hardly any crowding seen.
This despite big ticket draws like actor Suriya at the Aircel launch at Perungudi and actor Sneha at the Airtel launch on TTK Road, was an indicator of how bad the rains were.
Suriya, made it on time and managed to Chennai-launch the iPhone at midnight and also stuck around long enough to distribute the first 20-odd pieces to families who had been waiting for a couple of hours.
Surprisingly, hardly any fans were seen crowding and jostling the stars, and the bouncers organised at either venue had little worry.
The iphone launch happened simultaneously in eight cities nationally – Kolkata, Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida, besides Chennai by both mobile operators – all at midnight though, in true Jobs tradition, rain, sleet or hail.
