New Delhi: The titillating combination of sun, sand and cinema on the banks of the French Riviera is back again. With only a day to go before the stars descend on the red carpet, Cannes is buzzing with activity.

One of the world's most prestigious festivals, this 12-day celluloid extravaganza at Cannes turns 60 this year. And to mark this special occasion a bigger roster of stars, critics and cinema lovers are expected to be in attendance.

“This year we are satisfied because it is the 60th anniversary and for a birthday you like to invite friends, you like to have love and affection all around and I believe this is the feeling we do have, we have a very positive vibration around Cannes,” festival director, Thierry Fremaux said.

The festival will be declared open on Wednesday evening with filmmaker Wong Kar Wai presenting his English-language film My Blueberry Nights featuring Jude Law, Natalie Portman and singer Norah Jones.

Films vying for the prestigious Palme D'or this year include Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof, Christophe Honore's Les Chansons d'amour and David Fincher's Zodiac.

And judging the race for Cannes glory are Turkish novelist Orhan Pamuk, Australian actor Toni Collette and British director Stephen Frears of The Queen fame who also heads the jury.

But with Hollywood sequel Ocean's 13, starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt premiering in Cannes and Angelina Jolie promoting her film A Mighty Heart - the ‘Competition’ section at Cannes sure has competition to remain in the news.

The festival runs from May 16 to 27.
