New Delhi: What makes Mamata Banerjee angry? From throwing papers at the Speaker in Parliament, to walking out of the NDA government, to damaging property inside the West Bengal Assembly, Mamata Banerjee has done it all.
Her latest - a hunger strike - makes one wonder why Mamata Banerjee is so mercurial.
The answer is simple. A maverick politician like her is bound to pick up labels on her unpredicable journey.
She has been described as the true voice of dissent, Goddess Durga and didi Mamta for the marginalised and even the Queen of the Gutters.
Midway through her career, her shrill and vocal politics of revolt has got entwined with the unseemly politics of opportunism.
She has accepted a hit on the head by ruthless CPM cadres and used it to displace her Congress rivals.
Laloo Alam, with that one swing of the laathi, has built Brand Mamata. Indecisive as ever, she used the Tehelka investigation against George Fernandes to walk out of the NDA and join the Congress.
Earlier, she had taken on all her Congress dadas (brothers) in West Bengal and walked out to form her grassroots party, the Trinamool Congress.
She threw Parliamentary papers like confetti at Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee earlier this year and then sobbed like a child when the Buddhadeb government refused to take her seriously on Singur.
For the past 25 days she has been on a fast and this time it's the Naxalites, more than her own partymen who have her ears.
Mamata Banerjee remains a Bengali enigma.
