Mumbai: There was a time when film premieres used to be part of a films release and promotion campaign.
A film premiere usually meant a big celebration, with cast and crew, and members of the film fraternity. But with time passing by, this trend seem to be fading out.
Yashraj, the biggest banner which has a line-up of half a dozen releases in 2007, doesn’t believe in following the premiere tradition.
Nor does Ram Gopal Verma for whom films are factory products.
Even red carpet regular Karan Johar doesn’t believe in having premieres when it comes to his multi-starrers.
The damages of a film premiere are anywhere between Rs 25 to 40 lakh and maybe this is also one reason producers are refraining from premieres.
But for some, this expense is a part of marketing and promotion and in return they get publicity worth double the money put in a premiere.
Last few premieres in Bollywood that one can recollect are Anurag Basu’s Life in a …Metro , Apoorva Lakhiya’s Shootout at Lokhandwala and now the Deol dhamaka, Apne.
The Deols also have never encouraged film premieres, wonder what made them keep one for Apne?
“Yes, we never keep premieres otherwise but this time we did. At premieres people just come, talk and go away. This is an important film for us,” said Bobby Deol.
While the number of premieres have gone down, the red carpet has turned green.
Let the carpet turn blue, silver or golden but we just hope that the trend of film premieres doesn’t fade out. Let’s continue this filmy tradition for what it's worth!
