Who will clean up the mess on Chennai roads?

Chennai: The city of Chennai is stinking! And what is causing the stink?

The Chennai Corporation's seven-year contract with Singapore-based-company Onyx for garbage collection and disposal is over.

And the city's waste is now overflowing onto the roads, as Onyx is wrapping up operations in Chennai, taking with them their equipment and their garbage bins.

"We can't walk on the roads. The garbage flies everywhere and sticks to our clothes. The smell is unbearable too,” says a resident of Mylapore, Lakshmi.

“No one has come to collect garbage in the last two-three days,” adds another resident of RA Puram, Shankaran.

Complaints have been piling up over the last two weeks about mountains of garbage in Chennai.

The new company Fanalca hasn't stabilised operations in Chennai yet, so the Chennai Corporation is forced to chip in. And this is giving the Chennai Corporation Commissioner sleepless nights.

“There has been some problem with an equipment that is stuck in Singapore so that is why we have not stabilised operations yet. We are trying to come up with innovative solutions for this problem,” Corporation Commissioner, Chennai, Rajesh Lakhoni says.

The Corporation though is not in a benevolent mood. South American company, Fanalca and partner, Delhi-based Neel Metals were to take over on Sunday. The Corporation has now given them 15 days to clean up their act.

“We will issue notices to them. Worst-case scenario is of course termination. Though termination without alternative arrangements doesn't make sense. But we will take steps,” says Lakhoni.

But until then, the residents will just have to put up with the mess the city is in.
