New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday hauled up police forces in four states - Rajasthan, UP, Haryana and Delhi - for (mis)handling the Gurjar protests on Monday.
Calling it a national shame, the apex court served suo moto notices to the police chiefs of the four states. The officers will have to tell the court as to why protestors were allowed to get away with vandalism.
"The court has asked me to examine the various frames media has taken and to identify various offences that have occurred and pass them on to the police so that they can identify if there is any breach of duty from their side. At this stage I am asked to assist the court," said SC lawyer Rajiv Dhawan.
The Dadri-New Delhi section of Northern Railways bore the maximum brunt on Monday as trains were attacked and railway property damaged. The Agra zone of North Central railways has estimated a damage of close to Rs 90 lakh.
"This is a very serious matter. We will employ railway police to ensure that such things don’t happen in future,” said Superintendent of Police, Agra, Sushil Kr Singh.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has given the police chiefs of the affected states 10 days to file a comprehensive report on the damages incurred.
