New Delhi: A BJP party leader has defended RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's remarks on rape, and said that western culture and bikini-clad women in advertisements have a role to play in crimes against women. BJP member Sheshadri Chari made the remarks during CNN-IBN's India @ 9 show. He was speaking to Rajdeep Sardesai and said that both women and men need to observe the 'Lakshman-rekha'.

"If you want to sell a BMW, obviously the BMW has to be strategically placed between two bikini-clad women, so that the people don't notice the BMW, but the women," Chari said during the show. However, the remarks were slammed by other panelists, one of whom claimed that she faced sexual harassment while walking on the roads wearing a salwar-kameez. "Obviously, I won't be walking on the roads in a bikini," she said.

When asked to prescribe a Lakshman-rekha for men, Chari said that they must treat women as their equals.

Chari's 'bikini' remark follow Madhya Pradesh BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya's 'Lakshman-rekha' remark and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's 'rapes happen in India, not Bharat' remark.

While the BJP on Friday defended the RSS chief saying that his remark should be seen in its entirety, the party distanced itself from Vijayvargiya's remarks saying that the party disagreed with it and would ask the leader to withdraw it.
