Last word on oral hygiene
New Delhi: Oral hygiene may not be anyone’s favourite words, but the condition of our teeth says a lot about our health.
Cavities, dental decay and periodontal or gum disease are among the most common dental conditions. And a sugary and starchy diet or even lack of basic care due to your lifestyle can make you more likely to suffer tooth loss.
“Anything that is soft and sticks to the teeth and cannot be removed is scary,” says HOD, Dental Surgery, Fortis, Dr Rajesh Talwar.
Even lemon juice can damage the enamel by erosion. So direct teeth contact with lemons, grapefruit, vinegar and other strongly acid substances should be avoided.
Children should have sweets only once in a day and try and opt for sugar free snacks. Fruits including apples, oranges, pears and bananas are good for the teeth.
“They have found a link between and cardiovascular problems. And this is because of what is thought of is that the bacteria in the gums can enter the blood stream and cause problems in the heart,” says Dr Talwar.
A Research by the American Academy of Periodontology suggests that gum disease may:
Contribute to the development of heart disease.
Increase the risk of stroke Increase a woman's risk of having a low birth weight baby.
Pose a serious threat to those with diabetes, respiratory diseases or osteoporosis.
“It is extremely important to brush your teeth at night and that is because the plaque is going to take about 12 hours to form. If you clean it in the night then you will not get plaque formation,” says Dr Talwar.
So don't forget to visit your dentist every six months. But more importantly maintain oral hygiene and smile your way to health.
