Widow counts on court to save her from son's abuses

Mumbai: Premlata Chavan is tired to walk the steps of the Sessions Court in Mumbai.

The 78-year-old widow, who also suffers from a liver disorder, visits the court to save herself from her son who has been abusing her for months now.

"They abuse me badly and come to hit me. At this age, I have no strength to bear their abuses,” says Premlata.

Her son has been asking her to transfer her property in his name.

"Both my son and daughter-in-law do not allow me to come into my house. There is no food for me. Whatever I get is only from my daughters,” says Premlata.

While the 27th Metropolitan Magistrate granted Premlath's son and wife the benefit of doubt under the Probation of Offenders Act, the accused have now appealed against the order in the Sessions Court.

However, the prosecution feels it will only do more harm if the order is reversed.

"If the order of the 27th Metropolitan Magistrate is set aside, then they will be free to continue their atrocities. So it is up to the court to decide,” says Premlata’s counsel, Harshad Desai.

With only the court to look up to, all that Premlata can pray for is a verdict in her favour now.
