Jaipur: Rajasthan now has its own Rabri Devi in the making in Mahua. MLA Golma Devi is one of the 13 ministers of the Ashok Gehlot government sworn in on Friday.
Her oath may sound as a part of a regular swearing-in ceremony, but the moment Golma Devi got sworn in the Ashok Gehlot government, the celebrations by her supporters from Mahua captured everyone's eye. Her husband insists that he has become an MP without any elections.
“Sansad (Parliament) is MP which is Mantri Pati (minister’s husband) so without contesting any election I've become an MP thanks to her,” says former minister and legislator Jaipur and Golma’s husband Kiror Lal Meena.
Golma is an independent MLA from Mahua.
With four legislators from eastern Rajasthan rallying behind him, Kirori's support is important for the Congress in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections which is why Golma's making it to the council of ministers is no surprise.
Kirori and Golma even remind many of Laloo and Rabri Devi.
“It's not important that people are very educated or less educated. Even less educated people can have a strong common sense and Rabri Devi has shown the country how less educated people can govern well,” says Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot.
But though Golma doesn’t know how to read and write she has a helping hand and that is her husband.
“I got married in 1965, since then I've been advising her and she has been advising me at home and now we'll also run the position of minister with mutual advice. I've never been so happy as I am today, not even the day I got married,” says Kirori.
“She doesn't know how to read or write. We taught her to sign her name in two days and for the oath,” adds Kirori.
He says that he won't mind looking after the house while his wife's busy at work and Golma already knows her brief by heart.
“I'll look after the Janta (public),” says Golma.
