New Delhi: One of the most popular and user-friendly websites, Wikipedia, is now all set to open its office in India.
Wikipedia is the world’s largest online encyclopedia, which is written not by experts, but by editors like you and me. Yet, the site comes close to Encyclopedia Britannica in accuracy.
Barry Newstead, Chief Development Officer, Wikimedia Foundation said, “The magic of Wikipedia is that anyone can edit. They don't get a job because they do it. Nobody is earning any money. It's intangible. They do it because it feels good, to their mind, and to their heart.”
Salman Haroon, a businessman, has been editing Wikipedia for free, for five years. He spends two hours everyday on the site.
He said, “Information flow on Wikipedia is slightly different from Facebook or Youtube, where you have to send a legal notice to get something removed. Anybody can remove offensive content on Wikipedia.
Surprisingly, there are a fair number of Wikipedia articles in Hindi, followed by Marathi, Tamil, Bengali and Gujarati. The website will soon set up an office in Banglaore, where a large number of Wikipedia contributors would regularly meet and party.
Anirudh Singh Bhati, an editor with Wikipedia said, that Bangalore has the highest number of contributors to Wikipedia.
However, going by the popularity of the website pan India and its turnout at recent Wiki meets in Mumbai, Pune and Delhi, Banaglore had better watch out to maintain its numero uno position as being the city with highest number of contributors to Wikipedia.
