Lakhimpur-kheri: S Manjunath's family's loss is irreparable, but they are satisfied that those guilty of murdering their son are finally being punished.
The 27-year-old IIM graduate was working as a sales officer with the Indian Oil Corporation when he was shot dead in November in 2005 for blowing the whistle on adulteration in a petrol pump run by Monu Mittal and his aide Devesh Agnihotri in Lakhimpur-Kheri, Uttar Pradesh.
Manjunath's bullet ridden body was recovered five days later. A local court found Monu, Devesh and six others guilty on Friday and will decide the quantum of punishment on Monday.
The eight people have also been found guilty of criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence.
Monu Mittal has been found guilty under the Arms Act for allowing his licensed weapon to be used for killing someone.
Mittal and Agnihotri can be sentenced to death for being found guilty of murder, and that's exactly what Manjunath's lawyers are demanding.
"We are going to ask for death penalty," says his lawyer, I B Singh.
The court will also decide the fate of the other accused who have been found guilty of concealing the truth and conspiring to destroy evidence.
