Will it be a warm winter this year?

New Delhi: Morning mist and cool nights may be the call of winter, but the days in the northern plains are as hot as ever. Is it winter delayed or is it winter in a different clothing this year?

The winter clothes are finally on the shelves, but the heat is still very much on during the daytime. In fact, the Met department says the month of November has been warmer than normal in most parts of north-west India.

The minimum temperature has been 4 to 5 degree above normal.

Meteorological Department says winter has not come yet, only the winter pattern is setting in. "With the recent snowfall and rain, now temperature will fall. And with the fall, we can say that the winter pattern is setting in," B P Yadav, Head of Indian Meteorological Department, says.

Winter seems to have settled fully in Srinagar. With snow between one and five feet, temperatures hovering between 0 and 3 degrees, Kashmiris are busy preparing to take on a harsh winter. But the adjoining plains are oscillating between thick fog in the mornings and a bright sun during the day.

The birds, however, have declared winters as Himachal's Pong Dam received a record number of migratory birds this time. As for the people, the Met department says it depends on how one takes it.

"Winter is relative to each person. There is no specific criteria like the temperature, humidity or wind speed to say this is winter," Yadav points out.

The capital recorded a min of 15.1 degree Celsius and a maximum of 28.8 on Thursday. The Met department predicts mainly dry weather in Delhi for the next few days. But night temperatures are expected to dip, they say.
