Will 'Gangs of Wasseypur' overshadow 'Teri Meri Kahaani'?

New Delhi: It's romance versus crime at the box office this weekend with out and out romantic drama 'Teri Meri Kahaani' and reality-based crime thriller 'Gangs Of Wasseypur' hitting the screens on June 22.

Kunal Kohli's 'Teri Meri Kahaani' will see hit 'jodi' of 'Kaminey', Shahid Kapoor-Priyanka Chopra - serenading on the screen in three avatars in three different time zones. Anurag Kashyap directed 'Gangs Of Wasseypur', however, is all about gore and violence and it will focus on war between two gangs and the coal mafia in Wasseypur, Jharkhand.

Kohli loves pure romances and is ready to woo his fans with 'Teri Meri...', which will take them through a journey of eternal romance between a couple who have vowed to love each other not only in one life, but in every life to follow. Their love is so strong that even destiny wants to bring them together.

Production designer Muneesh Sappel has said the sets he has created of different eras for Kunal Kohli's upcoming film 'Teri Meri Kahani' are authentic and built up after a lot of research.
Kohli's Teri Meri Kahaani, featuring Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, depicts three eras of love stories set in 1910, 1960 and 2012.
The team had to create all the three eras and ensure that they look authentic.
The 1910 era will have Punjab, the 1960 story is set in Mumbai and 2012 in England.
In 'Teri Meri Kahani', the first story is set in Lahore in 1910 where Priyanka plays a Punjabi girl - Aradhana, in love with a Muslim boy Javed, played by Shahid.
In the 1960 story, Shahid plays a struggling music director Govind and Priyanka is a famous actress Rukhsar and they once again fall in love in Mumbai.
In 2012, the couple falls in love again as Radha and Krish in England.
In 1960 (Mumbai), the team has shown trams, chawl, guest houses, old studios and old cinema houses. Creating Mumbai took more time. In 2012 one would see modern times with ancient style of architecture.
Director Kunal Kohli, whose upcoming project 'Teri Meri Kahaani' stars Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, says he roped in the two actors as it was high time they were cast together in a romantic film.
Priyanka hasn't done too many love stories, especially a film like 'Teri Meri Kahaani' which is an out and out romantic entertainer.
The 'Hum Tum' director said that in spirit and heart, 'Teri Meri Kahaani' follows the kind of romantic rendezvous that veteran filmmaker Yash Chopra have been known for.
With the promos and songs of 'Teri Meri Kahaani' fetching good response, the filmmaker feels that credit also goes to the crackling chemistry between Shahid and Priyanka.
The film is set in three different time periods and Kunal says Shahid is getting into an altogether different mode with it.
Shahid is playing three different roles in the film across eras and that is something that he has never done before.
He is playing a strong Muslim character Javed which is a first for him.
Then he has never enacted a cool trendy character from the current era in a manner as shown in the film.
Getting into a 60s mode is not something that many actors of today's generation can boast of.
All of this brings uniqueness to the film because whenever Shahid has done something different, it has been grabbed by the audience with both hands," said Kunal.
Referring to films like 'Vivaah', 'Jab We Met' and 'Kaminey', each of which is considered as a landmark film in Shahid's career, Kunal says that the trend would continue with 'Teri Meri Kahaani' as well.
Now that the film is ready to be release in a month's time, Kunal is not shying away from declaring that 'Teri Meri Kahaani' is nothing short of being path breaking.
This is the first time that a narrative like this has been adapted for a film. It is a path breaking film in all senses.
Also starring Neha Sharma and Prachi Desai, 'Teri Meri Kahaani', with music by Sajid-Wajid, releases all over on June 22.

$Will \'Wasseypur\' overshadow \'Teri Meri Kahaani\'?$

Both the films being released on June 22 are completely different from each other in terms of story and treatment.

With the tagline 'thrice upon a love story', 'Teri Meri...' has three stories set in 1910, 1960 and 2012. Each character plays a different role in each time period.

The story starts in 1960 in Bombay with Govind (Shahid) and Ruksar (Priyanka), then moves ahead to the present Britain and shows Radha-Krish's relationship, and again goes back to 1910 Punjab to tell Aradhana and Javed's love story.

Made at a budget of around Rs.30 crore, the film has been shot in places like Maharashtra, Britain and Bihar.

Set of the film has been designed by Muneesh Sappel, while composer duo Sajid-Wajid has given music for 'Teri Meri Kahaani', which will also see Prachi Desai in a special appearance.

On the other hand, Kashyap shot more than 90 percent of 'Gangs of Wasseypur' in Uttar Pradesh to bring the right mood and feel to the story. Its cast doesn't boast of big stars, rather it has actors like Jaideep Ahlawat, Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Richa Chadda.

The story starts from the end of colonial India, when Shahid Khan loots the British trains, impersonating as Sultana Daku. Now outcast, Shahid becomes a worker at Ramadhir Singh's (Tigmanshu Dhulia) colliery, only to spur a revenge battle that passes on to generations.

At the turn of the decade, Shahid's son, Sardar Khan (Manoj Bajpayee) vows to get his father's honour back, becoming the most feared man of Wasseypur.

Staying true to its real life influences, the film explores this revenge saga through the socio-political dynamic in Wasseypur, Jharkhand, also known for coal and scrap trade mafia.

A two-part series, the film was screened at the 65th Cannes International Film Festival and received critical acclaim.

With both the films completely different from each other in terms of story and treatment, it would be interesting to see how viewers react to them.
