Price rise: Allies turn the heat on Congress

New Delhi: The pressure on the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government on the price rise issue is not just from the opposition, but also from its allies.

They see the benefits of a popular Budget evaporating fast, and want the government to aggressively fight the rising prices.

Now the UPA coalition is not a picture-perfect anymore. With inflation at seven per cent and prices rising every day, the UPA allies have now turned on the Congress and the feel good factor after Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram's please-all Budget seems to be evaporating into thin air.

"Farm loan waiver was a bold move and needs to be appreciated. But that is not enough, more needs to be done," senior Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and Union Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh said.

With Lok Sabha polls hanging over their heads, allies like RJD supremo Lalu Prasad are worried about their future.

Lalu also met Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi last week demanding that the UPA meet to take drastic measures to control rising prices.

Meanwhile, Maratha strongman and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar was in the front for taking credit when farm loans were waived but his party is not willing to share the burden of inflation.

"The question of price rise and inflation is far more important because it concerns the entire population" DP Tripathi, NCP Spokesperson, said.

The UPA coalition has weathered four stormy years with the Congress trying to please all.

But now when the party needs to keep its flock together uncontrolled prices could act as a spoilsport

The Congress is worried as not only does price rise affect its aam aadmi image but it's also upsetting its allies.
