Mumbai: Abhay Deol is one actor who isn't afraid of experimenting with different roles. If he is doing an out-and-out comedy with Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye, he made sure he has a serious drama like Dev D to back it up with.
Dev D, directed by Anurag Kashyap, was the initial brain child of Abhay, and is a contemporary version of Devdas.
“It’s the character of Devdas. It’s about obsession and addiction. It works in a contemporary setting because I grew up with a lot of drugs around me in high school and college. You see it taking over a lot of people and I felt this should be a nice subject to explore,” Abhay says.
“So I narrated the concept to Anurag and he was completely floored by it. I said I want to make this into film. Then Vikram Aditya Motwani wrote the first draft and Anurag wrote the last draft and that's how it got made,” he adds.
Abhay has always been one to pick the oddball script, unlike his more conventional cousins from Bollywood.
“If there is enough in the script for me to play with as an actor, if there enough for me to say how can I and what can I add to this character, to this script, why should I do it, how much of a handicap is it for me to do this role, why should I do this role. Both Oye Lucky and Dev D appealed to me,” Abhay says.
Well with Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye releasing on November 28, we hope that his hard work pays off.
