Crisis week for UPA; Ram Sethu, N-deal all pile up

New Delhi: It's the beginning of a politically crucial week for Sonia Gandhi. She will have to sort out differences over handling of the Ramar Sethu affidavit among some key members of the Manmohan Singh Ministry.

Meanwhile, the delay in the Sethusamudram project is causing friction with a key ally like the DMK who'll need to be placated.

And finally, she will have to keep a close watch on how the Left is taking Atomic Energy Commission of India Chairman Anil Kakodkar's visit to the IAEA conference in Vienna.

But first some discipline would have to be enforced after the spat between two Congress ministers, Jairam Ramesh and Union Minister for Culture, Ambika Soni.

“If I were the Cabinet Minister and this would have happened, I would have quit,” said Jairam Ramesh.

“I will resign if Sonia Gandhi or the party asks me to,” said Ambika Soni.

Sonia Gandhi has already spoken to the DMK boss, M Karunanidhi but that doesn't appeared to have resolved the problem. After all, the Sethusamudram project was an election pledge which Karunanidhi doesn't want to go back on.

They (UPA Government) first said Ram was a fiction of public imagination and then the next day they've refuted that claim. What kind of self-respecting Government would do that? Ram is a myth - it was an Aryan God imposed upon the Dravidians. They (UPA Government) have said Ram was an imaginary person and now they've backtracked on that claim," said Karunanidhi.

The UPA Government has preferred to yield to most of DMK's wishes over the past three years. But this would be a tough call.

After all, the BJP is waiting eagerly to make the most of a single wrong step of the Congress on the Ramar Setu issue.

And not just the DMK, the Left group of parties is still fuming over the nuke deal issue. Sonia Gandhi will have to be alert and make up her mind when she wants to go for a snap poll.
