Woman has narrow escape after falling in front of train

Associated Press

: Boston underground train that came to a screeching halt just inches from a woman who had fallen onto the tracks has been hailed as a hero.

Charice Lewis got a radio call from a fellow Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority employee, Jacqueline Osorio, who was standing on the platform at North Station on Friday night when she saw the woman tumble.

Lewis, who saw passengers on the platform frantically waving their arms, immediately tugged the emergency brake.

"And then as I am approaching, the lady popped the head up, and I'm like oh my God, someone's in the pit, so I just threw it in emergency," she said.

She said she didn't consider herself a hero and just did what she was supposed to do.

"The most exciting part for me was when she crawled out from under and she was fine. Anything any second, any other thing could have happened and I am just glad it came out the way it did," Lewis said.

The woman, whose name was not made public, suffered some scrapes and was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

She told authorities she had been drinking.

Lewis and Osorio were recognised by State Transportation Secretary Jeffrey Mullan on Monday and received a call of congratulations from Governor Deval Patrick.
