Bhubaneshwar: In a shocking incident in Balasore, Orissa a 24-year-old woman was forced to jump off a moving train to save herself from a molester.

In the process, the victim also lost her arm while she hit the ground after jumping off the moving train. She was running from a co-passenger who tried to molest her.

Smritirekha Pati was a research assistant in Balasore. The nightmarish train journey has left her bedridden, with multiple injuries that include a severed arm and a fractured leg.

The incident is painfully etched in her memory. On board the Shalimar-Adra super fast train, Smritirekha found she was alone in the train compartment with a male passenger after the Bankura station.

The man was drunk and assaulted her. In a bid to escape him, she jumped off the train

"I want that there should be adequate security for woman travelling alone in train so that no other woman faces the condition that I am going through now. The person who has done this to me should be punished immediately."

But a month after the incident, the police are yet to act. In fact, a proper case was registered only after media reports and women's activists mounted pressure on the police.

Malaya Chatterjee, Investigating officer at the Bankura Railway Station GRP said, "From the initial complaints made, we did not know that Smritirekha jumped off the train because of the molestation attempt. Now that she has formally made this complaint we will catch the culprit as soon as possible."

Meanwhile, Smritirekha's family has demanded compensation from the Railway authorities for failing to protect her.

But Smritirekha's hopes are ebbing as an attempt to protect herself has already cost her an arm and a leg.
