New Delhi: A 25-year-old woman on Wednesday committed suicide in North West Delhi because of alleged dowry harassment.
Astha, daughter of a North-West Delhi trader, had married into another business family just over a year ago.
In her suicide note, Astha said her husband Amit Jain and her in-laws were harassing her for dowry.
“We have arrested her parents-in-laws and her sister-in-law. A case under section 498 has been registered. We are still on the lookout for her husband,” said DCP, North-West Delhi Manish Agarwal.
Astha's in-laws had allegedly demanded over Rs 80 lakh during one year of Astha’s marriage, even after her family had gifted a Mercedes car to the groom at the wedding.
“She was being harassed a lot. They kept demanding money but we told her to be patient,” said Astha’s mother Rajini Jain.
Astha's family now alleges foul play. They suspect that Astha was murdered following her family giving up on their demands.
A vicious circle of money changing hands in the garb of tradition — Astha's death not only reflects the need for better implementation of anti-dowry laws but also highlights the need to introspect on age-old practices such as these.
