Click to play videoNew Delhi: A young man barged into the women's hostel at Shantiniketan’s Vishwa Bharati University in West Bengal and shot dead a girl student on Sunday afternoon.
The girl, who was a third year bachelor of music student of Shantiniketan, hails from Ghatal in West Midnapore district of West Bengal.
According to the police the girl was shot from a point blank range. The man later shot himself as well and his condition is stated to be critical. He has been admitted to the Vishwa Bharati hospital.
The latest report suggests that the accused has been identified. His name is Ambreesh kundu, a resident of West Midnapore.
The police said that the weapon was the service revolver of police constable with Kolkata police.
The revolver belonged to constable Sunil Majhi of Tolligunge police station.
According to the police, the assailant Kundu stole the revolver to accomplish his mission.
He was the personal driver of the additional office in charge of Tolligunge police station.
"The girl was brought to hospital dead. The youth is battling for life in a critical condition in the ICU of a hospital," Superintendent of police in Birbhum L N Meena told a news agency.
However, after the incident the students of the university are protesting against the breach of security, which led to the killing in broad daylight.
The students have called for class boycott on Monday in protest against the security breach.
Reacting to the incident, Vishwa Bharati University PRO Amitava Choudhury said, “University community is shocked and horrified to learn of the terrible incident. The university appeals all to maintain peace and help restore normalcy.”
Vishwa Bharati University is located in the sylvan ambience of Shantiniketan (Bolpur) in Birbhum district of West Bengal, established by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in 1921.
At present 1,100 male students and 1,170 female students (including school section) reside in 44 hostels of different capacities in Vishwa Bharati.
This is a third incident inside educational institute since December 2007.
Earlier, a student of a government school of Satna in Madhya Pradesh was shot dead by a senior schoolmate.
Last year in December a old student was killed by two of his classmates in Gurgaon.
