New Delhi: Close to 50 per cent of all Indian children face child abuse, says a recent report. What can be graver than the fact that every 2nd child in the country is actually vulnerably placed.

Childhood is an age of innocence, fun and wonder, but also an age of vulnerability, and children in Goa are at a higher risk.

A recent study revealed that along with international tourists, Goa also attracts thousands of paedophiles, each one exploiting about 20 children. This is a sight that many do not see and one that children's rights groups in Goa are trying to erase.

“One of the reasons why children are unsafe in our country or in our state is because people don't take notice if anything is happening,” said CRG Founder and Director, Nistha.

CRG started in 1996 and is run by volunteers – people committed to making Goa a safe zone for children. It functions as an education centre and a place where children can take refuge.

“We have opened schools which we run in the coastal belt where we talk a lot about how children can empower themselves. They should be aware of their rights. They have a right to be safe,” Nistha said.

Counsellors at CRG tackle issues of child safety at different levels. They conduct awareness classes for parents by showing them movies, talking to them about dangers unsupervised children face. Nistha, the director of CRG wants people to take collective responsibility of children.

With people like Nistha and organisations like CRG looking after them, kids in Goa have a chance to remains kids just a little bit longer.
