Women agitate over Shopian rape, deaths

New Delhi: The protests over the mysterious death of two women in Kashmir’s Shopian region have entered the seventh day.

An unofficial bandh has been called for in parts of Srinagar. But leaders like Asiya Andrabi of the Dukhatran-e-Millat are defying the bandh call to conduct an all-women meeting at Idgah in Shopian.

Andrabi plans to take ahead the agitation against the alleged rape and murder of two women in Kashmir.

Senior Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Gilani too has begun a ‘Chalo Shopian’ campaign.

Meanwhile the PDP and the Omar Abdullah government are trading charges, trying to gain political mileage from the incident.

The streets of major towns in the Valley wear a deserted look.

Locals allege that 22-year-old Nelofar and her sister-in-law Asiya were raped and murdered by security forces.

The separatists and the opposition have found a common cause.

Having tasted defeat at the hands of the National Conference, the opposition PDP has now got the Shopian point to beat the Omar Abdullah government over.

PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti said, “It is very sad that the government does not accept facts at face value and conduct an enquiry.”

Cornered NC leader and Jammu Kashmir’s chief minister Omar Abdullah faces his first major test in only his sixth month of leading the coalition government.

He has made repeated assurances which have so far fallen on deaf ears.

Omar Abdullah has ordered a judicial enquiry into the incident but the family of the alleged victims is on a hunger-strike.

The separatists have found a plank that unites many people at one go. It is feared that the Shopian deaths could assume the proportions of last year’s Amarnath agitation.

The Centre's continued silence on the issue has not gone down well with the locals.
