New Delhi: The Miranda House canteen in Delhi University is a one with a twist. The staff of the college canteen is not the men in black, but the women who have had to fight their own demons.
They have all been victims of either domestic violence, abuse or trafficking. But now they manage an all-woman canteen in the college.
“When I first heard we were going to run a canteen, I thought to myself, I will definitely try, I know we can succeed,” says Rubina.
The girls want to put their past behind them and are eager to start their lives on a clean slate by not looking at the flip side of life any more.
With the right recipe, one can probably learn how to make noodles perfectly. But there’s no recipe which helps you whip up the kind of courage and determination these girls have shown.
Apart from running the canteen, some of the girls like Rinku, want to make sure no one experiences a past quite like theirs.
“I want to do rescue and rehabilitation and counseling work. So I work with these girls for a bit and when I am not here they adjust duties accordingly,” says Rinku.
The canteen works on a no-profit no-loss basis at the moment. But the girls have plans to sell baked goods soon. And when they start making a profit, they want to set up a welfare fund for canteen employees.
From victims to survivors and now activists, these girls say they've only now begun their journey, but that they've started it with their best foot forward.
