Itanagar: India has a woman President but that does not seem to help the cause of women's rights much.
Even though polygamy, abuse and child marriage are big issues in the state women in Arunachal Pradesh are nowhere in the political picture for the coming Assembly elections on October 13. There are just five women candidates in the 60 constituencies.
"Arunachal is a state where there are many tribes, sub tribes. We have to consider representation on clan. We have to represent all tribes," says Congress state President Nabam Tuki.
Moreover, it is not just bias in politics as women in Arunachal are fighting a silent battle against injustice in society.
According to the State Women's Commission child marriage, polygamy, rape and domestic violence are uncomfortable truths in the state.
"A girl was being sold for one pig and one cow. And she came to women's commission. She was raped and she was pregnant. She had to deliver and she is only 13 years old," says State Commission for Women member Mapung Tadar.
Women activists in the state lament that there has been no change in the mindset of the people either.
"Society is not at all moving out of anything you mentioned, be it polygamy, be it crime," says DN College lecturer Taw Azu.
With crime against women a major concern and almost no women candidate in this election women's empowerment in Arunachal seems to be a far cry.
