New Delhi: The Women’s Reservation Bill, one of UPA government’s top priorities, has created a storm even before being tabled in parliament with JDU President Sharad Yadav threatening to kill himself should the Bill see the light of the day.
The JDU is pressing for modifications to the current bill to include quotas-within-the quota and accommodate OBC women.
“Kuch mahilayen ikhatti ho kar mahila reservation maangegi. Ho sakta hai hamare paas sankhya na ho par sukrat akela mar gaya tha zehar kha kar .Hum mar jaayenge, 90% logon ka gala kaatkar mahila reservation laana chahte hain. (Few women can't come together & demand a reservation. We'd rather die than let this happen),” he said.
However, ministers like Yadav now have Meira Kumar, the first woman speaker of the Lok Sabha to contend with. Madam Speaker reacted to Yadav’s statement, saying, “I have no comments to offer. Sharad Yadav ji is a very highly esteemed leader of our country and we will see what is to be done”.
