New Delhi: Maoists in Nepal are on the verge of forming a government but in a crucial meeting with UN officials their leader Prachanda has said he is not ready to ‘completely’ renounce violence.
“We want to lead this peace process to logical conclusion and we want to create a model of peace and through this we want to renounce this reactionary violence,” he said.
He, however, refused to rule out the use of violence completely saying that at the moment he cannot renounce every kind of violence.
Prachanda is confident his Maoist cadres will be integrated into the Nepal Army, notwithstanding the Army's refusal to consider politically indoctrinated people.
"I hope that when we will initiate the process of drafting the new constitution simultaneously. We will lead the process of integration,” Prachanda said.
Hopeful of diplomatic ties, the Maoist leader has also reached out to America, to get Washington to lift the terrorist tag on the Maoists.
"We expect the US to reconsider their policy towards us. Our party wants to establish diplomatic relations with the US and we want them to co-operate in creating a new Nepal," he said.
Prachanda hopes to form a government within a month and has indicated he wants to take other parties with him.
On that score, the signals are positive but on one issue he will not be moved: the 240-year-old monarchy will be abolished.
