Bangalore: Now that the CAT results have been declared, it’s become increasingly obvious over the past couple of years that those south of the Vindhyas and those possessing some work experience seem to have an edge over others.
Design Engineer David Sebastian Newnes, who works with an MNC in Bangalore feels that having work experience helps in cracking the interactive rounds of the CAT exam.
Newnes did not get any response the last two times he took the test but this time round, he was inundated with calls from no less than six of the Indian Institutes of Management after his CAT results. He feels that his work experience made the difference.
“Work experience also helps in the group discussions and personal interviews because the person with industry background has more in-depth knowledge of what they actually expect,” Newnes explained.
Statistically, CAT appears to have been easier to crack for those with work experience, since the past couple of years.
Data analysts also say nearly 60 per cent of those who get calls from IIMs are people with work experience – a majority of these from the IT and IT-enabled services industry.
Another trend which seems to be going strong is that the South appears to have an upper hand in IIM admissions.
Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad account for almost 40 per cent of those who get into the IIMs. Management teachers say it's due to the south's dominance in IT.
Says Time Institute’s director, Ajay Arora, “The IT industry is responsible for getting the best talent into the cities and hence that's the reason cities like Bangalore put a large amount of students into the IIMs every year.”
In short
60 per cent of those who get calls from IIMs have work experience
Nearly 80 per cent of these are from IT/ ITES sector
Nearly 50 per cent of those who finally make it are from IT/ ITES background
Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad account for almost 40 per cent of those who make it to the IIMs
NCR stands second – at 33 per cent
