New Delhi: A worker employed in the construction at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport was crushed to death by a road roller on Thursday afternoon.
Jamuna Ram, a 30-year-old labourer from Jharkhand, was working near the taxiway of the newly built runway when the accident took place.
GMR in a press release termed the cause of Jamuna Ram’s death as accidental hit by a vehicle.
"Worker Mr Jamuna Ram, Aged 30 years, resident of Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, accidentally hurt by a vehicle. He was rushed to hospital and was declared brought dead," the company said in its official statement.
Larsen and Toubro, the firm engaged in the construction job could not be contacted for comment despite repeated attempts. The police also denied comment. A case of negligence has been registered. No arrests have been made so far. This is the second accident in the last forty days.
On February 15, another construction worker died when his safety belt snapped. GMR had to compensate the worker’s family when the 12000-strong labour force went on a four-day strike.
The workers are paid less than Rs 6 per hour for a twelve-hour work shift. Questions are now being raised about the safety and the working environment of the workers.
Even as a world-class airport awaits its passengers, for the poor construction worker who works a twelve-hour shift for Rs 70, the conditions that he works in are hardly world class, dangerous, and with scant regard for their safety and often verging on near mortal.
