Chennai: In yet another incident of death by lynching of a company head by disgruntled workers, sacked workers of a multinational company in Coimbatore brutally lynched their vice-president to death on Monday.

Forty-five-year-old IIM graduate Roy George's death has shocked corporate India.

Roy George's Nephew Saral J George said, “Around noon on Monday, some rogue elements stormed into his office and hit him fatally on his head, a skull surgery was performed and he was put on life support. Around 1:30 pm on Tuesday, he left this world for the next.”

Roy's company says the union had extremist Naxalite elements who suddenly stopped production and when they refused to take down company orders, the company sacked 43 workers who then beat Roy to death.

The incident is yet again a grim reminder of the risk corporate managers face while dealing with workers unrest.

President, CII, Tamil Nadu C KRanganathan said, "It's unpardonable and unfortunate. We will sit together and decide on measures we take to tackle these problems."

Tamil Nadu's Deputy chief minister M KStalin said, "The police are investigating the case. No form of violence is acceptable. Let the law take it’s course.”

It happened a year ago as well. LK Choudhray, CEO of Italian company Graciano was killed by workers in Greater Noida.

Graciano says it has heightened security for managers and lays greater focus on communication with workers, but the reality is that corporate India and MNCs are getting used to dealing with workers unions. Compounded by the end of good times, trade unions are now an MNC's worst nightmare.

Corporate Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said, "Corporates have to be sensitive enough to keep peace with the workers.”

Politicians may find it difficult to take on trade unions, but the larger question's is perhaps how corporate India can balance workers rights with corporate management.
