New Delhi: The world's oldest orangutan has died in a zoo in Miami, Florida at the age of 55.
The primate, Nonja, was found dead at the Miami Metro Zoo.
Officials say a tumour may have caused the death.
Nonja, whose name means ‘girl’ in Dutch, was born in the wild on the Indonesian island of Sumatra in 1952. She was shipped to Miami from a zoo in Holland in 1983.
Orangutans usually die before they reach their mid-40s and are classified as critically endangered by the World Conservation Union. They could become extinct in the wild in less than 10 years.
