New Delhi: A brazen molestation in Mumbai on new year's eve. The shocking rape of a foreigner in Goa, a Swedish national molested in Kochi — these are just some of the cases that made it to the headlines. However, there are many more cases that go unreported.

Now, a worried Government is thinking of giving more teeth to laws which deal with such cases.

Women & Child Development Minister, Renuka Chaudhary says, "There should be quick response system."

The Women and Child Development Ministry has already initiated consultation with legal experts and changes in the Indian Penal Code are being contemplated.

Molestation cases are generally dealt with under Section 509 of the IPC — which includes words uttered, gestures or any act intended to insult the modesty of women.

The ministry is rooting for the following:

  • An accelerated punishment system

  • a quick response system that disposes of cases in two to three hearings

  • Harsher punishments for repeated offenders

The proposal, once finalised, will be sent to the Home Ministry for relevant changes in the statutory penal provisions.

Manic Mumbai

Two years in a row, New Year revelry in Mumbai has gone awry. This year, in a city which boasts of being safe for women, a mob of 70 to 80 men groped and molested two women on a busy main street in Juhu early on New Year's Day.
