New Delhi: India's latest sporting hero, wrestler Ramesh Kumar, returned home on Thursday night to a warm welcome after bagging a bronze medal in the World Wrestling Championships in Herning, Denmark.
Kumar bagged the medal in the 74kg freestyle category to become the first Indian to win a medal at the World Championship since Vishambhar Singh's silver in 1967.
He defeated Alexandr Burca of Moldova in the repechage round to secure bronze and gave india a big reason to cheer after Olympic bronze medallist Sushil Kumar failed to get among the medals.
Kumar won the bout on on technical points after both the wrestlers tied at the score of 7-7 at the end of the match.
The 27-year-old wrestler from Uttar Pradesh had trounced Dustin Schalatter of the America 3-2 and then went on to beat UK's Michael Grundy 4-2.
In the quarter-finals Kumar easily overcame Bulagaria's Kiri Terziev 7-4 but lost the semi-final bout to Chamsulvarayev of Azerbaizan 0-3.
