New Delhi: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday admitted a writ petition seeking to ban "obscene" pictures on the packages and advertisements" of condoms.
The petitioner submitted that the manufacturers publicised condoms with "obscene" pictures which made the people who want to buy them feel "shy".
He claimed that condoms were primarily a medical product and not a product to promote sex.
A titillating ad on flavoured condoms aired at prime time on Indian television channels had raked up the "decency debate" and the checks and balances required on the content shown on the small screen last year.
The advertisement for XXX flavoured condoms was according to the censor board, "in bad taste".
The censor board had then agreed that though it was important to educate the public on the importance of condoms, advertisements that crossed the decency border would have to be banned.
