Yamuna nears danger mark, evacuation begins

New Delhi: The Yamuna on Saturday rose threateningly close to the danger level due to incessant rains and release of water into the river by Haryana, swamping low-lying areas of the National Capital.

People living along the banks of the river in Delhi have now been forced to evacuate due to rising levels of the water, which is expected to breach the danger mark of 204.83 metres anytime now.

They say that police officials came and asked them to evacuate the area. They are also complaining that the water levels have been rising for three days but that no one has come to their rescue till now.

vo 2: While people complain there are no rescue and relief measures in place... the delhi government claims to have roped in all nodal departments to ensure safe transit of residents in low-lying areas, who are now being moved to relief camps. 70 boats and over 80 divers are a part of the evacuation process.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, however, says "Camps are being set up and people have been asked to evacuate the area. There are four to five vulnerable areas and the Army as well as the police have been asked to help. Boats are being made ready."

Officials of the Flood Control Department and the Disaster Management Authority are also constantly making announcements and going into people's homes and asking them to move to safer areas.

Flood Control Official, Harish, says, "We are making announcements and shifting people."

With incessant rains lashing the Capital and the Haryana government releasing water from its swollen reservoirs upstream the Yamuna, it will be a while before the 1 lakh people living along the banks of the river return to their homes.
