New Delhi: Festival of Navratri ended on a tragic note after nine people were feared drowned in Yamuna while participating in the Durga Puja festivities in the Capital on Thursday.
Rescuers fished out three bodies on Saturday, fire brigade officials said, adding that five more were still missing. The rescuers had found one body on Friday.
Renu Devi, a resident of Anand Parbat area of New Delhi, is inconsolable. Her only son Kanhiaya drowned while immersing the idol of goddess Durga.
“He was my only brother. We were handed over his body today. Our life has lost meaning now,” Kanhaiya’s sister, Rekha, says.
The incident took place in Khajuri Pushta when a group of people went there to immerse the idol of goddess Durga in the river.
The group slipped into the river while dancing around the idol, fire officials said.
Aftab and his cousin Asif too drowned during idol immersion. It was their family's custom to take part in the immersion procession every year.
The spot where the incident occurred was chosen for immersions only because it is secluded.
Even though there was no formal authorisation for the immersion, the victims’ families are now demanding that such areas be cordoned off.
