Bangalore: Twenty five days after being sent to jail, former Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa was finally released on bail on Tuesday evening after the Karnataka High Court granted him bail in the second land de-notification case as well.

"I am 100 per cent confident that I have not done any mistake," said Yeddyurappa after coming out of the jail.

But the relief for the BJP leader could be short-lived.

"We plan to go to the Supreme Court to plead for cancellation of bail," said lawyer for complainant Nithin R.

But even as the celebrations have begun and battle lines drawn, it's the larger role that Yeddyurappa will play politically, that's got people watching.

With the crucial Bellary by-election due this month-end, how the BJP treats its scam-tainted ex-chief minister will set the course for the party. will the party keep him at a distance or project him as the sympathy-deserving victim of the Opposition's politics of revenge?

At least for now, it doesn't look like Yeddyurappa has lost his clout.

"Yes, definitely he will be campaigning for party in by election," said Karnataka state BJP President KS Eshwarappa.

Could this then backfire on the BJP?

"We'll use that as our trump card. We will definitely tell the people look this is the man who has gone to jail, this is the man who has done things against the law of the land and would you support him?" said Karnataka Congress President G Parameshwara.
