Yeddyurappa takes oath as CM

Bangalore: The new Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Karnataka with BS Yeddyurappa as Chief Minister assumed office in Bangalore on Friday.

Yeddyurappa has been sworn in as Chief Minister of Karnataka for the second time in just seven months.

But this time his BJP-led government backed by six independents looks more stable.

Immediately after the swearing-in ceremony, Yeddyurappa reasserted his faith in development-oriented politics.

"Development is the only agenda," Yeddyurappa said.

BJP's prime ministerial candidate LK Advani and President Rajnath Singh were there to witness the historic event. So was Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi who had campaigned all over Karnataka.

It is not however going to be a smooth ride for Yeddyurappa.

The powerful mining mafia led by the Reddys of Bellary has already started demanding its pound of flesh for their help in installing a BJP government.

The entire Reddy brigade has also joined the Cabinet.

"Let there be no doubt about the stability of my government as we enjoy clear majority," Yeddyurappa said.

Yeddyurappa has inducted 29 Cabinet ministers and tried to maintain regional and caste balance.

Though the BJP didn't field a single minority candidate in the election, he has inducted Mumtaj Ali Khan, a retired Bangalore University professor as a minister to give a secular touch to his government.

Now that BJP has finally formed a government in Karnataka, the party has its eye on General Elections.
